Opaque Intent: Wrestling and a Relationship Victory in the Ring?
Men Can Stop Rape10 May 2012 | 9:39 amBy Hope MookimTo say that World Wrestling Entertainment, WWE for short, does not exactly portray the healthiest forms of masculinity and femininity might be an understatement. To be fair, my encounters with the show have more to do with the sheer inescapability of it, and those encounters have not done much to change my mind. It’s either playing or recording on every TV in my house, and I dare not ask to be excused to eat in another room or make a peep until commercials are on. I am resigned to sit silently, staring at a wall or my dinner plate—desperately looking for anything to look at… -

The site currently lists 11 cities, though one imagines the intention is to eventually branch out. This is a good example of the kind of coordinated effort that can occur when funds are brought to bear and help support the work that is happening on the front lines. Also, the web site design is A+. SAAM 2.0: How to Use Social Media to Raise Sexual Assault Awareness
25 Apr 2012 | 2:12 pmLast year when the Obama administration announceda plan to address the number of sexual assault cases at colleges nationwide, it was an important reminder to many Americans that sex crimes are a real threat both on and off campus. Considering that every two minutes someone is sexually assaulted in the U.S., and that rape is still the least reported crime in America, it’s essential that we remain vigilant about preventing and educating about sexual violence. In a nod to April’s designation as Sexual Assault Awareness Month or SAAM some well-respected organizations and institutions are… -
Snack Food Intervention
18 Apr 2012 | 2:34 pmThe above videoof a subway fight was making the rounds of the internet last week. The video begins in the middle of the fight as a woman pushes a man, the man kicks her, and she kicks him back. While camera phone captured fight videos are not uncommon on many corners of the web, this video gained popularity not for the brutality of the fight, but for the interesting way it was broken up. A stoic man eating chips steps into the middle of the scrum, and his facial expression never changes as the shouting dies down and the fight ends. He just keeps eating his chips. It’s hard to tell… -
THE MASCULINITY CONVERSATIONS: David Belt on Facilitating Men of Strength Clubs in Kansas City
23 Mar 2012 | 1:26 pmWe at Men Can Stop Rape (MCSR) believe that stereotypical masculinity (or any other term you might choose: traditional masculinity, hypermasculinity, hegemonic masculinity, dominant masculinity) is still too much the air that we breathe. It’s something we often take in automatically, unaware. As one of the significant sources of violence against women across the globe, as well as other forms of violence, and as an unconscious source of conflict for many men, stereotypical masculinity causes great harm when it goes unrecognized. We all benefit from consciously developing healthier,… -

What A Witch Hunt Actually Is
9 May 2012 | 9:32 amLately, when I’ve suggested that rape survivors should have places to say, “so and so raped me,” and to name the name of the assailant, some people have used the phrase “witch hunt.” This is offensive, and it is a poor metaphor. I’ll tell you why: there are three components of a witch hunt, in historical practice, that do not fit an environment of public transparency. (1) It’s all made up. (2) Confessions are extracted by torture. (3) The result is execution. Let’s look at a historical case, the North Berwick Witch Trials. James VI,… -

Preventing Suicides – Why I Do What I Do at the Injury Center
9 May 2012 | 1:28 pmDeb Karch, PhD Guest blogger: Deb Karch, PhD I wrote my first suicide note when I was 13 years old. I hid it and the many more that followed in my stamp collection, books or other secret hideaways, all places I knew my mom would never look. For the next 15 years, each time I packed up my belongings for another move, I would find another one I had forgotten about. I would read each one with dismay. I learned the hard way that an overdose only resulted in having to drink a thick black charcoal concoction with one ankle strapped to a bed frame to keep me from taking off. Running the car in… -
Stepping in for Child Abuse Prevention
20 Apr 2012 | 7:45 amWe see and hear about violence and acts of violence every day. Some of these events have become so common that we no longer notice them, or are desensitized to their impact. Occasionally, an act of violence grabs our attention, and moves us to want to do something to change the situation. You have probably asked yourself, “When should someone step in to protect a child from violence from a parent or caregiver?” What is your role and when are you overstepping your bounds? I heard a story recently that really made me pause and think about this very issue. In a recent trip through an… -

My wife and I were driving down a crowded interstate in Atlanta a couple of years ago when a speeding car swerved and crashed into our van, and then we were hit by three other cars going 65 mph. The fact that we walked away with only stiff necks and minor injuries seemed like a miracle….or was it? We were wearing our seat belts and our van took the brunt of the impact because of good engineering and front and side air bags. … -
Brain Injury – No Longer the “Silent” Epidemic
16 Mar 2012 | 10:47 amFor many Native American tribes, the brown bear is a symbol of courage, strength, protection, and life. On November 27, 2009, as I was getting dressed to go out to dinner with my husband Bruce Carmichael and friends, a thought ran through my head that I should wear my Native American bear pin, as I might need courage that evening. Where this feeling came from is unclear, but it certainly proved to be true A CT scan of a brain: TBI is sometimes referred to as the “silent epidemic” because the complications from TBI, such as changes affecting thinking, sensation, language, or emotions, may… -

Why The NRA Wants The Trayvon Martin Case To Go Away
2 May 2012 | 12:26 pmWhen the National Rifle Association’s Wayne LaPierre finally spoke out about the Trayvon Martin shooting, it was to decry the media’s coverage of the tragedy as “sensational reporting from Florida.” It’s understandable that the NRA would be uncomfortable with the intense media attention to this particular shooting tragedy. For one thing, the shooting [...] -
NRA becomes toxic when exposed to light
22 Apr 2012 | 12:34 pmIn the weeks since George Zimmerman’s killing of Trayvon Martin, corporate America has been force fed a crash survey of public opinion on gun policy. George Zimmerman Had Accomplices. Too Bad We Can’t Arrest Them Too.
13 Apr 2012 | 10:58 amDon’t get me wrong, I blame George Zimmerman for shooting Trayvon Martin. But I also blame the NRA and the politicians who do their bidding for putting the gun in his hands. Factors To Consider In Choosing A Program for “disruptive physicians”.
11 May 2012 | 5:39 pmPosted on February 25, 2011 by George Anderson Physicians who are mandated to attend classes or coaching for “disruptive behavior” frequently perceive themselves to be under assault from their State Medical Boards, Credential Committees, Human Resource Managers, Hospital Administration or Physician Well-Being Committees. Do you have nomophobia?

A recent survey by U.K.-based mobile security service provider SecurEnvoy conducted among 1,000 people found that two thirds (66%) of respondents fear losing or being without their mobile phone. And it is on the rise — up 13% from just four years ago. Nomophobia also includes the anxiety someone feels when not in the range of a cell tower to receive optimal reception.
